NYK Introduces Initiative to Use Ammonia as Marine Fuel

On February 9, 2021, NYK participated in an International Maritime Organization (IMO) sponsored symposium on alternative low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels. The event was attended by international organizations, shipping industry groups, and related companies.

During the event, Toshi Nakamura, senior general manager of NYK’s Green Business Group, made a presentation titled “Expectations from a shipowner on using ammonia as marine fuel for zero-emission ships,” during which he introduced the NYK Group's efforts to achieve zero-emission ships through the use of ammonia, in addition to challenges to the endeavor and future prospects.

On February 3, 2021, NYK announced the NYK Group ESG Story,* which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy. In particular, NYK considers the reduction of GHG emissions to be an important issue and is working to create new green businesses through various research projects aimed at decarbonization. To strongly promote ESG management, the NYK Group will encourage new value creation as a sustainable solution provider through a business strategy that responds to climate change.
