NYK Group Opens New Office in Silicon Valley
Strengthening Capabilities to Explore Promising Technologies and Business Models and Create New Businesses
NYK Group Americas Inc. (“NGA”), the NYK Group’s regional headquarters for the Americas, will open a Silicon Valley branch in Sunnyvale, California, in October. The new branch is being established to strengthen business development functions across the Americas by identifying advanced technologies and emerging business opportunities that could create synergies with the NYK Group’s businesses at an early stage, as well as fostering collaboration and creating new businesses.
Silicon Valley is home to a broad innovation ecosystem* comprising startups, venture capital firms, research institutions, and established companies in fields including artificial intelligence (AI), digital technology, energy, and decarbonization. Through the new branch, NGA will build relationships within this ecosystem and explore promising technologies and business models. In addition to gathering information on technologies and business opportunities identified locally, the NYK Group will assess their commercialization potential by leveraging its fleet, logistics network, customer base, and other strengths through initiatives such as proof-of-concept projects, business partnerships, and equity investments.
The NYK Group will utilize the new branch as a hub for identifying technologies and business opportunities and fostering co-creation across the Americas. Through these efforts, the Group aims to enhance the competitiveness of its existing businesses while promoting the creation of new businesses originating from the region.
Yutaka Ikeda, managing executive officer of NYK, regional head of the Americas for the NYK Group, and CEO of NYK Group Americas Inc., commented:
“In the United States, new technologies and business models that have the potential to transform industries and society are continually emerging in fields such as AI, digital technology, and energy. By opening the Silicon Valley branch, we will be better positioned to identify these developments at an early stage and build relationships with startups, investors, research institutions, and other members of the local innovation ecosystem. NGA will serve as a starting point for business development across the Americas. By combining the knowledge and opportunities identified locally with the NYK Group’s strengths, we aim to create new value and businesses originating in the Americas.”
