NYK Enhances NAV9000 Safety Standard

“NAV9000 Plus” Raises the Safety Benchmark of the NYK Fleet

The NYK Group is proud to introduce “NAV9000 Plus,” an enhancement of our flagship NAV9000* safety standard for Group-operated vessels, shipowners, and ship-management companies. Scheduled to roll out in April 2026, NAV9000 Plus will further elevate the safety quality of our vessels through attentive follow-up centered on the themes of “guidance” and “co-creation.”

・NYK Golden Rule
Our non-negotiable safety standards are codified to ensure that all stakeholders pursue safety under a shared set of values.
・Evaluation Sheets
Assessment results are broken down and presented visually to highlight strengths and weaknesses, enabling tailored follow-up actions.
・Ambassador System
Designated ambassadors, well-versed in the NAV9000 Plus concept, are appointed within each department (dry bulk, car carrier, LNG carrier, tanker) to establish a robust follow-up system tailored to each vessel type.
・Optimized Approaches Based on Ship Management Structure
Flexible, tailored measures will be implemented based on the ship's management structure. For instance, when a vessel is managed by a company outside our Group, we will ensure optimal support and follow-up through our Ambassador Program. Conversely, when a vessel is managed by the NYK Group, additional engagement will be provided through an internal process.

Goals of NAV9000 Plus

・Enhancing Safety Awareness
The NYK Group promotes ongoing incident prevention to ensure safe operations and strengthen a safety culture. NAV9000 Plus seeks to heighten awareness that each person's safety mindset and actions are vital to supporting the safety of the entire organization.
・Strengthening Safety Quality

Guided by the idea that “Without safety, there is no trust; without trust, there is no business,” we remain dedicated to fostering ongoing dialogue — the very essence of NAV9000 Plus — through “ guidance” and “co-creation.” Our goal is to further enhance safety quality from the vessel operators’ perspective.

* Our NAV9000 safety standard, established in 1998, systematically integrates international regulations, shipper requirements, and our extensive experience in accident-prevention measures, ensuring that we meet our obligations for safe operation and environmental protection as an operator, regardless of the relationship between the shipowner and charterer.
