NYK and BHP Renew Strategic Partnership to Advance Decarbonization and Safety in the Dry Bulk Industry
On November 25, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) signed an agreement with BHP Group Ltd (BHP), a leading global resources company in Australia, to renew a memorandum of understanding (MOU) initially concluded in June 2022. The renewal reinforces both companies’ commitment to support decarbonization and improving the safety of vessel operations through strengthened collaboration.
The renewed MOU introduces the following updated initiatives:
・Continued joint research on technologies for ammonia dual-fuel vessels
・Propulsion of biofuel trials and other measures to advance low-carbon shipping
・Enhanced safety operation through NYK Line’s high-quality vessel tonnage supply for the maritime transport of a wide range of dry bulk cargoes
By establishing a bilateral collaboration model, NYK Line and BHP aim to build momentum in the dry bulk industry, focusing on both decarbonization and safe operations.
This extension strengthens our collaboration with BHP as we work side by side to achieve our decarbonization ambitions.

“BHP welcomes the opportunity to build on our shared history with long-term strategic partner, NYK Line. We have a shared commitment to be innovative and to accelerate industry safety, technology, and sustainability performance across the maritime sector. As one of the world’s largest dry bulk charterers, BHP has a deep interest in working alongside our partners to advance a safer, technology-driven, and efficient shipping industry.”
Hiroaki Nishiyama, Managing Executive Officer, Chief Executive of Dry Bulk Division, NYK Line
“We are delighted to strengthen our strategic partnership with BHP further and work together to promote decarbonization and enhance safe operations in the dry bulk industry. Amid an uncertain outlook for environmental regulations, we will combine the strengths of both companies to accelerate the development of next-generation environmental technologies and steadily advance toward achieving our net-zero target by 2050.”
