NYK Holds 2025 Annual Roundtable Discussion on Safe Vessel Operations with President, Captains, Chief Engineers, and Seafarers

Active Discussions on Developing Young Maritime Engineers and Creating a More Open Environment for Dialogue with Senior Seafarers

On September 12, NYK held its annual roundtable discussion at its Tokyo head office to discuss current conditions and issues experienced on board vessels.

The event was part of NYK’s Remember Naka-no-Se safety campaign* and provided a vital forum for top management to exchange opinions directly with captains and chief engineers to further develop practical measures with respect to the safe operation of vessels.

Under the leadership of NYK president Takaya Soga, who oversees NYK’s Safety and Environmental Management Committee, the gathering was attended by more than 150 participants, including three ship captains and three chief engineers who had disembarked, the captains and chief engineers of the car carrier Daisy Leader and LNG carrier Energy Horizon, and 21 executive officers.

A focal point of the discussions was the development of young seafarers. Proposals included the importance of providing constructive feedback to young employees, establishing clear guidance standards, and enhancing training programs for seafarers. Additionally, opinions were exchanged on ways to improve onboard communication. Soga summarized the meeting by stating, "We will continue to work toward fostering a work environment where both senior and young employees can communicate more easily with each other."
