Program Background
Tsinghua University encourages its students to participate in overseas social practice programs to develop their global competencies and foster connections. During the summer of 2025, the university is sending over 800 students and faculty abroad for activities centered on the theme “Youth Action in Global Development.” As part of this program, a group of 10 students studying shipping and ports visited Japan for an eight-day program, with NYK selected as one of their key destinations.
Program Details
On July 22 at our Tokyo headquarters, Koichiro Hayashi, head of NYK’s Research Group, delivered an insightful presentation on the company’s business operations and the history of modern Japanese shipping. He emphasized NYK’s significant contributions to the industry and provided an overview of how the NYK Tokyo Container Terminal efficiently manages a high volume of marine containers, thereby supporting logistics in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The participants raised many questions, including comparisons of container terminals in Japan and China, making it a valuable opportunity to learn about Japanese shipping and ports.
On July 24, the students visited Hikawa Maru, a historic cargo-passenger liner now serving as a museum ship permanently moored in front of Yokohama’s Yamashita Park. Through this experience, the students gained valuable insights into ship equipment and life on board during the vessel’s operational period, thus deepening their appreciation for the history and culture of maritime transportation.
NYK remains committed to contributing to society through collaborations with external partners in the fields of education and culture.
