NYK Presents Company's History and Business to U.S. and Canadian Social Studies Teachers

Assists fellowship program for North American social studies teachers, featuring an active Q&A session

On June 26, NYK assisted the Keizai Koho Center (KKC), also known as the Japan Institute for Social and Economic Affairs,* in hosting the KKC Fellowship Program for social studies teachers visiting Japan from the U.S. and Canada. As part of this initiative, NYK delivered a presentation in Yokohama highlighting the company’s history and business operations, followed by a guided tour of NYK Hikawa Maru.

Program Background

Since 1908, KKC has implemented this international public relations initiative, inviting middle and high school educators from the U.S. and Canada to Japan. The program aims to enhance their understanding of Japanese politics, economy, society, and education.

In the 2025 program, themed "A Chaotic Global Situation: Educational Environment and Opportunities for Addressing Social Issues, Expectations for Businesses," seven educators participated in a nine-day program that featured visits to various businesses and organizations, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of contemporary Japan.

Program Details

During the event, an NYK public relations representative delivered a presentation covering the company’s history — from its founding to the present — highlighting the shipping industry’s contribution to Japan's modern industrial development. The participants raised numerous questions, including inquiries about our decarbonization efforts and the impact of geopolitical risks on the shipping industry. This interaction proved to be a valuable opportunity for them to recognize the indispensable role of shipping in people's daily lives.

Additionally, the educators visited NYK Hikawa Maru, a historic passenger ship now serving as a moored museum ship in front of Yokohama’s Yamashita Park. An NYK captain guided the group through the vessel, providing detailed insights into the vessel’s equipment and daily operations, enriching the participants’ understanding of the history and culture of maritime transport.

Through this program, NYK seeks to enhance North American educators' knowledge of Japan and the shipping industry while also fostering international mutual understanding. NYK remains committed to societal contributions and will continue to collaborate with external partners in the fields of education and culture.
