NYK to Purchase CDR Credits from Climeworks

Contribute to the Realization of Net-zero CO2 Emissions by 2050 by Allocating the Credits to Residual Emissions Including Scope 1

NYK has signed a three-year contract with Climeworks, a Swiss next-generation technology company, to purchase a portfolio of carbon dioxide removal credits (“CDR credits”) combining various decarbonization technologies in a single portfolio starting in fiscal year 2026. NYK is the first Japanese company to purchase CDR credits in a portfolio format from Climeworks.

The NYK Group is promoting reducing greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions, including CO2 emissions, toward achieving net-zero emissions by maximizing energy efficiency and transitioning from traditional fossil fuels to next-generation fuels such as LNG, ammonia, and methanol. Despite these continuing efforts, some residual emissions in the shipping industry cannot be avoided. By offsetting the residual emissions with CDR credits, we aim to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions.

Climeworks will remove and store CO2 from the air by utilizing biochar, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), and enhanced rock weathering. NYK will purchase CDR credits generated by these methods and allocate them to residual emissions, including Scope 1, to help achieve our 2050 net-zero decarbonization goal.*

Going forward, based on an NYK position paper** on CDR credits, NYK will continue to promote initiatives that contribute to reducing GHG emissions through various credits, working with our customers to realize a decarbonized society.
