NYK Participates in the meeting on Climate Change and Gender Equality with Executive Director of UN Global Compact

On March 18, NYK participated in the Global Compact Network Japan High-Level Meeting held in conjunction with the annual local network forum of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).

NYK, the only shipping company to participate in the meeting, endorses the Sustainable Ocean Principles formulated by the UNGC. NYK was invited to this meeting in recognition of its efforts to promote the implementation of the 10 principles in the four areas set forth by the UNGC (i.e., human rights, labor standards, environment, and anti-corruption) and the penetration of the SDGs into NYK management, as well as to encourage NYK to lead the private sector through the company’s ambitious activities and initiatives.

During the meeting, 12 Japanese companies actively exchanged opinions and shared initiatives on climate change measures and gender equality with one another and Sanda Ojiambo, assistant secretary-general, CEO and executive director of the UNGC.

NYK shared the current status of GHG emissions surrounding the shipping industry, the company’s decarbonization targets, and a scenario for achieving net-zero emissions.

As a member of the UNGC, NYK will continue its efforts to achieve the SDGs.
