Nearly 200 Attend NYK-sponsored Safety Symposium

July 2, 2018

As part of its annual Remember Naka-no-Se safety campaign, NYK held a safety symposium today at the company’s head office in Tokyo to remind all those involved in vessel operations of the importance of safety and global environmental conservation. Nearly 200 participants representing shipowners, ship-management companies, and NYK sought to keep past lessons learnt from fading away, particularly those from the oil spill that occurred from the VLCC Diamond Grace at Naka-no-se shoal in Tokyo Bay on July 2, 1997. The symposium also gave the participants the opportunity to mark the first day of another 20 years of safety awareness activities.

- About the Campaign
The Remember Naka-no-Se safety campaign is conducted for two months from July 1 every year, and draws on the lessons learnt by the crude oil tanker Diamond Grace oil spill to encourage all NYK Group members to bear in mind the importance of safe operations. During the campaign, NYK board members, employees, and related partners visit vessels to share safety-related material with officers and crews and deepen mutual understanding of safe operation.

- Safety Symposium
(1)Keynote Lecture
Kiyohito Tani, a Japan Coast Guard disaster prevention officer in the Marine Environment Protection and Disaster Prevention Division of the Guard and Rescue Department, gave a presentation comparing past and present control systems, during which he spoke about the Diamond Grace accident from the viewpoint of the government by introducing traffic policies and prevention and defense systems that have changed since the accident, as well as current efforts to keep shipping safe.

(2)Safety Awareness Video
Participants also screened a safety awareness video that had been produced in February and received an explanation from the production staff about the video’s background and intention.

(3)Panel Discussion
A panel discussion was moderated by Tomoyuki Koyama, NYK managing corporate officer, and featured Yuichi Yamamoto, maritime advisor at JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation (and a Japan Coast Guard officer at the time of the accident); Yoshihiro Tani, adviser at Toa Corporation (and a Japan Coast Guard officer at the time of the accident); Motohiro Sugiura, a former representative of the UK P&I Club Japan; and Koichi Akamine, an NYK advisor.

The panel engaged in an active discussion and reviewed the accident from various angles, giving particular attention to past and present crisis response, lessons learnt, and current efforts.

The greatest mission of the NYK Group is to deliver our customers’ goods safety and securely. NYK continues to work steadily to ensure safe operation on land and at sea.
