Free Entrance for Maritime Students

October 6, 2014

NYK has officially decided to waive entrance fees to the NYK Maritime Museum and NYK Hikawamaru for students who are enrolled in commercial shipping courses at nine maritime educational institutions in Japan, starting on October 1, 2014. This decision aims to encourage students to cultivate their understanding of maritime affairs and is part of NYK’s initiative to foster Japanese seafarers.

Free entrance will be available to approximately 5,700 students who study commercial shipping in courses offered by nine maritime educational institutions: National Institute of Technology, Toba College; Hiroshima National College of Maritime Technology; National Institute of Technology, Oshima College; Yuge National College of Maritime Technology; Toyama National College of Technology; Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology; Faculty of Maritime Sciences, Kobe University; School of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University; and National Fisheries University.

In Japan, the ocean transport business plays an important role in supporting people’s lives and contributes greatly to the economy. Although maritime cargo transport is increasing due to global population growth, the number of Japanese crew on overseas transport vessels  has decreased to a level that requires the employment of foreign crew members.* Against such a backdrop, NYK has decided to make admission free of charge to inspire students who will lead the next generation of shipping, and to stimulate interest in the history of Japanese maritime transport and vessels, with the hope that more Japanese students will contribute to society by becoming crew members.
