For a second consecutive year, NYK has been selected by CDP to be included in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI). NYK received a score of 98 out of 100 and was one of 24 companies included amongJapan’s 500 largest companies.

An information session was held in Tokyo today, and at the session NYK executive vice-president corporate officer Tadaaki Naito reported on NYK’s activities to reduce negative environmental impacts.

Based on its environmental management vision — i.e., "to contribute to the global environment and the creation of sustainable societies by managing environmental risks and arriving at an optimal balance between environment and economy" — NYK has become a tireless promoter of the development of innovative technologies and devices to improve vessel operation and thus reduce negative environmental impacts. In addition, last year NYK’s collection and disclosure of numerical data on greenhouse gas emissions covered by Scope 1, 2, and 3 of the GHG Protocol* were certified as accurate by a third-party certifier.

Each year, company responses are reviewed, analyzed, and scored by the CDP for the quality of disclosure and performance on actions taken to mitigate climate change. To enter the CDLI, a company must achieve a score within the top 10 percent of Japan’s 500 largest companies by market capitalization, based on the FTSE Japan Index.

The CDP is an international, not-for-profit organization providing the only global system for more than 5,000 companies and cities around the world to measure, disclose, manage, and share vital environmental information. The CDP harnesses the power of market forces, including 722 institutional investors with assets of US$87 trillion, to collect information from companies on their greenhouse gas emissions and assessment of climate change and water risk and opportunity. The CDP’s annual information request was sent to the Japan 500 target companies asking the companies to measure and report data and an understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company.

NYK makes every effort to manage environmental risks and contribute to a sustainable society to ensure an optimal balance between economic progress and environmental protection.
