Schoolteachers Spend Three Days in Study at NYK

NYK Tokyo Container Terminal behind teachers

From July 31 to August 2, NYK welcomed eight elementary and junior high school teachers from the Kanagawa Prefecture Board of Education to participate in a program for teachers to promote their understanding of corporate activities. The program was arranged in cooperation with the Japan Institute for Social and Economic Affairs, and this was the 18th time for NYK to participate.

This training program was held during the teachers’ summer break, and during the program NYK explained about its corporate activities, environmental measures, and human resources development activities, some of which could possibly be used in future school management.
 


At the bridge of Asuka II

During the three days, participants were given lectures about the NYK Group’s businesses and its human resources development programs, and also invited to join in group work and discussions about the company’s bulk shipping and logistics activities, thus giving everyone the opportunity to actively participate in the program. The event also encouraged dialogue between teachers and company’s staffs.

In addition, visits were arranged to the cruise ship Asuka II, NYK Tokyo Container Terminal, NYK Maritime Museum, and the museum ship NYK Hikawamaru. The opportunity helped give the teachers a better understanding of the history and current operations of the shipping and logistics industries.

Feedback from the teachers included the following:

--“I felt there were so many good points that we should learn from them, including the high organizational strength of a private company to win out over the competition and grow.”
--“It was a significant training program to consider how I should handle my own future job and relationships with my students.”
--“The training was impressive because we could see that a variety of support activities are offered to employees throughout their careers, including a mentoring system.”
--“The stories from the captain and chief engineers at the museum and NYK Hikawamaru were heartfelt and applicable to the school environment. I thought that I would tell the children about the satisfaction and greatness of working on ships at sea.”
--“I learned of the importance of having a global sense when working with staff members on a global scale.”
 
NYK continues to work positively as a good corporate citizen on activities that contribute to our society.
