Schoolteachers Spend Three Days in Study at NYK

September 6, 2011

With NYK Hikawamaru behind teachers

From 23 to 25 August, NYK welcomed 11 elementary and junior high schools teachers from the Hino City Board of Education to participate in a program for teachers to promote their understanding of corporate activities. The program was arranged in cooperation with the Japan Institute for Social and Economic Affairs, and this was the 17th time for NYK to participate.

This training program was held over three days during the summer break, and during this time, NYK explained about its corporate activities, environmental measures, and human resources development, some of which could possibly be used in future school management.
Participants were given lectures and also invited to join in group work and discussions about the bulk shipping and logistics businesses. The event also encouraged dialogue between those who specialize in education and those who have made careers in business.
In addition, visits were arranged to the containership NYK Vega, the NYK Maritime Museum, and the museum ship NYK Hikawamaru. The opportunity helped give the teachers a better understanding of the history and current operations of the shipping and logistics industries.
Feedback from the teachers included the following:
--“The company’s serious attempts toward the environment are impressive.”
--“As a teacher, there were a lot of points that I could relate to, such as the need for continual improvement and the importance of teamwork and originality and ingenuity.”
--“This training was significant when considering my job and my relationship with children.”
--“The story the captain told at the museum and the tour of the NYK Hikawamaru was heartfelt across boundaries between schools and companies. I thought that I would tell children about the satisfaction and greatness of working on ships at sea.”
--“To enhance the international awareness of children, I would like to utilize the experience gained from this training program.”
NYK continues to work positively as a good corporate citizen on activities that contribute to our society.
