On November 15, Takao Ito, NYK corporate officer and chief representative for China, and his colleagues attended the 2010 NYK scholarship awards ceremony at Dalian Maritime University (DMU). Forty selected excellent students received NYK scholarships granted by Mr. Ito together with his encouragement to be the backbone of future society by studying hard. Mr. Ito mentioned that the NYK Group has been contributing to society in many ways as a responsible corporate citizen. In China, NYK has particularly been focusing on educational support on a fundamental level, from “Hope school project” to specific cases, such as the rebuilding of Yuanshan Primary School in Hua Zhong City in Xian Xi province after the Sichuan earthquake followed by a donation of 2,000 books by NYK Group employees in China. Wang Zhao He, council chairman of DMU, expressed his sincere gratitude for NYK’s long-term support of the DMU students.
Eleven days before the DMU ceremony, Mr. Ito also granted NYK scholarships to 36 excellent students at Shanghai Maritime University (SMU). Jin Yongxing, vice president of SMU, expressed his appreciation for NYK's continuous support in spite of the current difficult economic situation.
NYK has been offering dedicated scholarships to students at both DMU and SMU since 2001 to support the education of its valued seafarers. Since the start of this CSR project in China 10 years ago, 509 teachers and students have received NYK scholarships.
