NYK Donates Stocked Water to the Big Issue Japan Foundation

NYK has donated 2,400 1.5-liter bottles of drinking water to the Big Issue Japan Foundation* through the Japan Philanthropic Association.**

NYK stocks drinking water and food at its head office as part of the company’s disaster preparedness. After internal discussions about how to make the best use of these nonperishables at their scheduled replacement, we decided to donate the water to the Big Issue Japan Foundation.
This foundation, in cooperation with citizens and companies, offers programs to help homeless people help themselves. The foundation provides various support programs, including independent living support, employment placement and training, and cultural and sports activities. To help prevent heat stroke, the donated water will be distributed to homeless people out in the summer heat selling the organization’s magazine, The Big Issue.
About 150 homeless people have registered as vendors. Vendors may keep 160 yen of the 300-yen selling price of each magazine. Since the magazine’s launch in September 2003, 3.88 million copies have been sold through March 2010, providing 574.8 million yen in income to homeless vendors and allowing 121 people to escape homelessness by being able to afford inexpensive lodging.
The NYK Group continues to work positively as a good corporate citizen on activities that contribute to our society.
* The Big Issue Japan Foundation
The Big Issue Japan Ltd. was established in 2003 as the main body of the Big Issue Japan Foundation with the aim to provide homeless people with the means to earn an income and to provide support for them so that they can pull themselves out of homelessness. The structure allows homeless people to keep more than 50 percent of revenue generated from the sale of The Big Issue magazine. In September 2007, the NPO Big Issue Japan Foundation was established because there was a definite need for an additional support program that included employment assistance to help homeless people become independent.
