NYK's Challenge to Decarbonization -NYK SUPER ECO SHIP-
To achieve our greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target and decarbonization, we have reviewed the technical advances conceived for our previous future concept ship NYK Super Eco Ship 2030.
Together with MTI, the maritime R&D arm of NYK, and Elomatic, an engineering and consulting company based in Finland, we have taken advantage of advancements in hull remodeling, hull weight reduction, energy conservation, and digitalization to newly design an emission-free future concept ship.

Special Content NYK SUPER ECO SHIP 2030 Our concept for the future- 69% less CO2 emissions
Not a joke, Not a toy, Not only a dream-
Shipping is one of the most eco-friendly forms of transportation. However, GHG from shipping is increasing along with the growth of world trade. And so, to keep shipping both the lifeblood of the world economy and the most eco-friendly transport, we design tomorrow's concept ships and press forward on the technical developments needed to achieve them.

Eco-friendly Transportation: Shipping
If the volume of goods transported by sea increases 3% every year, the volume in 40 years will be 3.3 times today's volume. To cut total CO2 emissions in half by 2050, we have to reduce CO2 emissions per ton-mile by 85%. So, we are striving for further technical and operational innovation.
Designing the Future Together
We are targeting the achievement of “zero emissions” by 2050 and have designed the concept ship NYK Super Eco Ship 2030 as a milestone for 2030 with MTI (our subsidiary technology institute), Elomatic (a marine consulting company in Finland), and Garroni Progetti S.r.l. (a ship designer in Italy) not only to make it clear what we need to develop technically in the long term but also to lead the development of shipping operations, including cargo handling and traffic infrastructure. Moreover, we hope that NYK Super Eco Ship 2030 will inspire many young people to pursue shipping service or marine technology.

Alternative Energy
At present, vessels are propelled by diesel engines that burn fossil fuel. But to develop a sustainable society we must not only save energy but also use clean energy. Thus, we are focusing on fuel cells as a promising clean-energy option.
