NYK Receives ESI Award for Third Consecutive Year

February 29, 2016

For a third consecutive year, NYK was one of 10 shipping lines recognized with an Environmental Ship Index (ESI)* award by HAROPA, a joint initiative between the ports of Le Havre, Rouen, and Paris.

During the awards ceremony in Paris on December 3, 2015, Jerome de Ricqles, director of the NYK France Liner Division, received a trophy from Emmanuele Perron, president of the Supervisory Board of Grand Port Maritime du Havre (GPMH), and from Herve Martel, director of GPMH.

The award recognized the performance of shipping lines in the 2014 calendar year, but the ceremony had been postponed so that it could coincide with COP21, also known as the Paris Climate Conference.

The ESI was set up by the World Port Climate Initiative and identifies vessels managing to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through a reporting scheme that evaluates the amounts of nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide released.

Since 2012, HAROPA has recognized the top 10 shipping lines operating containerships or Ro-Ro vessels scoring more than 30 points per call in a complex calculation that includes vessel specifications, bunkering details, etc., and is validated using the official ESI website.

NYK will continue its efforts to contribute to the realization of a global environment and sustainable society based on the group’s “More Than Shipping 2018” medium-term management plan.
