NYK's Volunteer Point System Generates Donations for Three Children's Charities

March 12, 2015

In June 2014, the NYK Group introduced a volunteer point system within Japan to encourage greater participation by the group’s officers and employees in activities that benefit society. During the 2014 calendar year, 256,313 points were amassed, and a correlating monetary amount will be donated by the company to the charities below. Three charities engaged in activities that promote education and provide support to children were selected by NYK’s Office for Corporate Citizenship, and the exact amount allocated to each charity will be proportionate to its share of the total number of votes received from balloting NYK volunteers.

(1) International Children’s Action Network (ICAN)
An NPO tasked with providing medical care, education, and support for disaster-affected communities in the Philippines to improve the health and livelihoods of children. NYK’s donation was used to construct a shelter for children living in harsh conditions on city streets. Website: https://www.ican.or.jp/j/about.html (Japanese)

(2) Community Road Empowerment (CORE)
An NGO providing support to young people in developing countries by (1) offering job training to local residents to teach low-cost construction techniques using local materials, and (2) supporting the construction of routes to school for children, thus improving the infrastructure connecting rural and urban areas. To achieve this, a do-nou procedure is used in which sandbags are aligned and buried to form the foundations of dirt roads. (Do-nou is a Japanese word that refers to wrapping soil in a burlap bag.) (3) Kid’s Door
An NGO that gathers student volunteers to provide educational support to economically disadvantaged children seeking admission into school or searching for employment in Japan. This support attempts to ensure decent economic prospects for children by closing educational gaps induced by financial gaps. This assistance helps prevent economically disadvantaged children from falling into the negative spiral of halting their education prior tograduation from high school and resultantly finding it difficult to obtain decent employment. The second year of the NYK Group’s volunteer point program began in January 2015, and the company is looking forward to even greater participation this year.
