NYK Group Company Develops New Lubricity-improving,
Anti-mold Oil Additive

December 1, 2014

Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co. Ltd., (head office: Yokohama; president: Kazutoshi Kamata) an NYK Group company, has developed a new lubricity-improving, anti-mold oil additive for low-sulfur gas oil.*

The additive, Yunic750LS-F, can be added to low-sulfur (0.1%) gas oil that will soon be required in emission control areas.** The additive lessens fuel-oil equipment problems that can be caused by gas oil having a lack of lubricity or containing mold, thus improving the safety of fuel-oil equipment and contributing to better operations. Low-sulfur gas oil is used only in emission control areas, so there is the possibility that it could be stored in the gas oil tank over an extended time. The anti-mold feature of this additive prevents mold caused by condensed water that can mix with the gas oil.

Until now, separate additives were needed for lubricity improvement and anti-mold measures, but Yunic750LS-F has both properties in one product. Patent and trademark applications have been filed.

The NYK Group continues to take an active role in the environmental fields based on the NYK Group’s “More Than Shipping 2018” medium-term management.

 -- Yunic750LS-F Features

1.    Improvement of the lubricity of low-sulfur gas oil
- Improves lubricity when blended with low-sulfur gas oil having low lubricity and low viscosity, and thus prevents troubles (abnormal friction and agglutination) in fuel-oil equipment
- Improves the engine maker's recommended HFRR*** test values (460 micrometers or less)
2. High anti-mold performance
     - Effective, long-term anti-mold properties that allow for the long-term storage of gas oil
- Prevents blockages caused by the growth of mold in fuel oil equipment
3.  Easy handling
Easier handling than conventional additives because less storage space is required and dosage mistakes can be better avoided by combining the features in (1) and (2) above.

* Marine gas oil
Fuel oils used on vessels — i.e., heavy fuel oil, marine diesel oil, marine gas oil, and the like — are graded by their components, and the quality of marine gas oil is rated the highest among these oils.

** Emission control areas
Emission limits of sulfur in fuel oils will fall from the current 1.0% to 0.1% from January 1, 2015 in emission control areas, which are mostly located off Europe and North America.

*** HFRR (high frequency reciprocating rig)
The HFRR is a standardized method of evaluating the lubricating ability of fuel oils. The HFRR uses a ball to which a load is applied, and the ball then reciprocates by moving back and forth on a metal surface immersed in the test fuel oil. The size of the scars created on the ball is used to evaluate the lubricating ability of the fuel oil. The smaller the size, the better the lubricity of the fuel oil.
