UN Global Compact Office Recognizes NYK Once Again

December 14, 2009

NYK has once again been recognized by the UN Global Compact Office for having a Notable COP (Communication on Progress). This is the second such recognition for NYK-the first came for its COP in 2007-and only the second time a company based in Japan has received such an honor twice.

In May 2006, NYK endorsed the principles of the UN Global Compact,* and as of December 10, 7,151 organizations, 101 of which are based in Japan, had done the same. Each program participant is required to submit a COP annually detailing progress made in implementing the 10 principles of the UN Global Compact.

NYK’s COP included details from the 2009 edition of the company’s CSR report demonstrating the company’s efforts to adhere to the 10 principles. Moreover, NYK’s COP contained a report about the company’s participation in the January 2009 Caring for Climate initiative. Notable COPs are carefully screened and determined by the UN Global Compact Office. COPs featured in the Notable COP program have been chosen because they represent illustrative and inspirational examples of communicating progress. In fact, only about 3% of COPs were recognized as notable COP.

The NYK Group will continue its efforts to contribute to a sustainable society by realizing the Global Compact’s 10 principles in the areas of human rights, labor standards, the environment, and anti-corruption.

*The Global Compact was first proposed by UN secretary-general Kofi Annan in 1999 and formally inaugurated in July of the following year at the UN headquarters in New York. It calls for participating organizations around the globe to support and put into practice 10 key principles in four areas, i.e., human rights, labor standards, the environment, and anti-corruption, the latter of which was added in June 2004.
