Ceremonies were recently held at both Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) and Dalian Maritime University (DMU) for students receiving scholarships from NYK. These scholarship programs were launched as an NYK Group CSR activity in 2001, and the company has since funded scholarships at both schools for nine consecutive years.
On November 5, 2009, a ceremony was held at SMU for 36 students, and at the ceremony Takao Ito, NYK corporate officer and chief reprehensive for China, encouraged the students to study hard so that they can be the backbone of tomorrow’s society. Ito emphasized that “Together with Society” is a heading on the NYK Group’s mission statement, and the company continues to make every effort to make significant contributions to society. Professor Jin Yongxing, the vice-president of SMU, expressed his sincere gratitude for NYK’s long-term support of students at SMU and emphasized the contribution that these students will eventually make to the shipping industry.
Three days before this ceremony, Ito visited DMU, where a ceremony was held for 40 students. At that event, Professor Sun Yuqing, vice president of DMU, expressed his appreciation for NYK's continual support despite the current economic downturn.
NYK has been providing dedicated scholarships to these schools’ high-achieving students and those experiencing economic difficulties to promote the cultivation and education of shipping excellence.
The NYK Group will continue its CSR activities in the field of education through such programs.
