On October 13, NYK Shipmanagement Pte. Ltd. (head office: Singapore; NYK SM)*, a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK, became the first ship manager in Asia to receive certification by Det Norske Veritas (DNV)** for a competence management system (CMS) that was deemed to meet DNV’s strict standards. CMS is a systematic method of education and training designed to minimize any gap between the competence level required by a company and the level of each individual seafarer on board.
By introducing the CMS, NYKSM will be able to utilize data from evaluations to systematically assign seafarers to training programs. Moreover, by establishing a uniform database, the evaluation of seafarers throughout the entire company can be realized.
This system will be deployed on all 24 tankers managed by NYKSM to uniformly control the education and training of seafarers aboard those vessels. NYKSM is also planning to expand the system throughout its entire managed fleet of 104 ships.
NYK has realized that the key to achieving safe ship operations is recruiting highly qualified people and training them. The company therefore makes every effort to train its seafarers, notably through tie-ups with the world’s leading maritime universities and through its own NYK-TDG Maritime Academy in the Philippines. This wide deployment of CMS by NYKSM is one of the ways for NYK to meet its challenges and achieve its mission.
NYK will continue its efforts to maintain safe ship operations by encouraging training that produce highly qualified officers and engineers.
