NYK Lodestar Rescues Sailor in Distress

July 13, 2009

On June 29, NYK Lodestar, an NYK containership, rescued an American sailor on a troubled yacht.

The NYK vessel was sailing from Oakland, California, to Tokyo when it reached the yacht roughly two hours after picking up a distress call at about 12:30 p.m. 330 miles northwest of San Francisco. The NYK vessel slowed down and maneuvered windward of the yacht, and the pilot ladder was then used to rescue the sailor.

The yacht had encountered rough weather that left it with a broken rudder on its voyage from Olympia, Washington, to Hawaii. The rescued sailor is in good health and disembarked from NYK Lodestar at Tokyo on July 8.
