NYK Receives Highest Rating on SMBC Environmental Friendliness Assessment
June 25, 2009
NYK has received the highest rating on an assessment of environmental friendliness* conducted by the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC; president: Masayuki Oku).
NYK’s high rating is the result of its environmental management system and environmental communications, both of which were determined to be at an extremely high level, in addition to the company’s environment-sensitive corporate management, which was assessed as being “excellent.”
NYK places environmental issues at the very top of its corporate priorities. The Cool Earth Project launched in April 2008 under the direct supervision of the president addresses the following tasks: (1) to strive for the development of innovative technologies that will minimize greenhouse gas emissions; (2) to properly respond to debates on environmental policy in the international maritime transport sector; (3) to accurately grasp and evaluate related economic matters, such as an expansion of capital spending and a reduction of fuel expenses; and (4) to study possible business-model reforms that can help address environmental concerns, such as an increase in ship navigating at reduced speed. NYK has been proactively promoting environmental issues through this project and carrying out these activities in public, which led to NYK receiving such a high evaluation.
NYK will continue its efforts to realize a sustainable society through activities related to conservation of the global environment and the development of environmental technologies.
*The SMBC Environmental Friendliness Assessment Finance System provides customers with a simplified diagnosis of those areas where their activities could be improved from an environmental perspective. The assessment uses a standard created by Japan Research Institute Limited (president: Yasuyuki Kimoto) and establishes loan conditions based on the assessment.
