NYK Receives 'Excellent Company Selected by Earth Environment Conference Award'

March 3, 2009

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koji Miyahara) received the Excellent Company Selected by Earth Environment Conference Award at the 18th annual Earth Environment Awards ceremony sponsored by the Fujisankei Communications Group.

The Earth Environment Awards are given to corporations, local governments, universities, colleges, and citizens’ groups that make significant contributions to environmental conservation activities. This is the third time for NYK to be recognized with the Earth Environment Awards, following the company’s winning of the Nippon Keidanren Chairman Award in 2005 and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award in 2007.

The Earth Environment Conference highly evaluates that NYK views the environmental issues as one of the most significant management tasks as it proactively conducts the following activities.

1)     Launches ‘environment special mission — NYK Cool Earth Project’
Develops and orders ‘50% energy-saving car carriers’ in or before 2010
The NYK Group launched the “environment special mission — NYK Cool Earth Project,” under the supervision of the NYK president in April 2008. Approximately 70 billion yen will be invested in the project, including development of innovative environmental technology, over six years. As one of measures, NYK began proving experiments to utilize solar energy for ship’s propulsion system. To achieve operations of zero-emission vessels in 2050, NYK will develop and order energy-conserving vessels that will improve energy efficiency 50% by 2010.

2)     Introduces environment management index for vessels and develops data collection system
The NYK Group has adopted the amount of CO2 emission to transport one-ton freight per kilometer as the environment management index to assess operational efficiency. The environment management index conforms to guidelines established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Additionally, the NYK Group from an early stage has established and introduced the ECO REPORTING SYSTEM for collecting and controlling data of every vessel, including chartered vessels, in service with the aim to easily grasp the index.

3)     Proactively adopts Alternative Maritime Power (AMP)
To curtail amount of gas emitted from vessels while at berth, the NYK Group pioneered the development and application of the system that supplies necessary electricity from land to container vessels at the Port of Los Angeles. Additionally, the NYK Group has decided to equip charging system known as the Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) to all large-size container vessels.

4)     Promotes energy conservation activities by utilizing current forecast system (energy-saving operations using the The Japan Current “Kuroshio”)
The NYK Group conducts energy-saving operations by effectively utilizing the current forecast system. For verifications with large tankers, the NYK Group utilizes information on current forecast provided by the Forecast Ocean Partnership LLP (FOP). The NYK Group has confirmed the use of the system will have a maximum effect on cutting energy consumption and emission of CO2 by nine percent in the Black Current zone. ?

The NYK Group continues its efforts with environmental technologies to contribute to society as well as taking part in various activities related to environmental protection by utilizing its international network as a global logistics company.

The Earth Environment Awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, with the Prince Akishino in attendance at Meiji Kinenkan (Motoakasaka, Minato-ku) in Tokyo.

ECO REPORTING SYSTEM
NYK’s proprietary system that facilitates collection and control of information,?including environmental load (amount of CO2 missions) from vessels in service in order to grasp the environment management index.

Calculating formula:
The environment management index (EMI) equals to the environmental load (amount of CO2 emitted by maritime transport) divided by the business added value (maritime transport weight ton-kilometers).

Forecast Ocean Partnership LLP (FOP)
A partnership association established by a researcher (individual status) of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc. (corporate status). JAMSTEC provides assistance to FOP through research findings obtained by utilizing its own Earth Simulator and other relevant means to contribute to society.
