NYK Volunteers Begin Revitalization Activities in Area Devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake

July 9, 2013

NYK Group volunteers — including employees, board members, and former employees — began a number of support activities during the months of June and July to assist in the revitalization of the area devastated by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

When company-sponsored emergency assistance began in October 2011, hundreds of NYK Group volunteers each contributed several days of their time to assist the recovery efforts. In this new phase, NYK volunteers helped revitalize affected towns, restructure communities, develop local products, and revive the fisheries industry in the cities of Otsuchi and Ofunato in Iwate prefecture.

The most recent volunteer program was held from June 28 to 30 and from July 5 to 7. Participants left Tokyo late Friday evening on a bus that traveled throughout the night and arrived at its destination in the early morning. Over the next two days — Saturday and Sunday — the 41 participants helped prepare field and fishing equipment and pull up the weeds around a local facility. In addition to examining this visit and exchange, the volunteers discussed the area’s reconstruction and the relationship NYK has with non-profit organizations engaging in support activities in the devastated area.

NYK will continue its efforts to support those in need to fulfill the group’s commitment to remaining a socially responsible corporation.
