After receiving the award, the company established NYK-Heyerdahl Memorial Projects, fulfilling Dr. Heyerdahl*2, a marine lover's cherished desire to support maritime environmental conservation related activities. The projects are supported by an approximately 50 million yen contribution: US$100,000 (approximately 10 million yen) cash prize award contributed by the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award and an additional 40 million yen contributed by NYK.
The NYK Fellowship, one of the foundation NYK-Heyerdahl Memorial Projects, sends university students studying in Japan and NYK Group staff members to sites all around the world and provides them with opportunities to engage in environmental surveys and research. In the one to two week research activities, participants are guided by the world's leading scientists, while working on survey and research activities together with volunteers from other countries.
NYK would like the NYK Nature Fellowship participants to work towards achieving a better global society by utilizing the expertise and experience gained from their intercultural exchanges and maritime survey and research work.
