NYK to Sponsor Booth at Spring 2018 “Manabi no Fes”

March 7, 2018

As a part of the NYK Mirai Project,* NYK will once again sponsor a booth at the spring “Manabi no Fes” (Festival of Learning),** which will be held this year on April 3 at the Japan Science Foundation’s museum in central Tokyo. The event will give children and their families the opportunity to learn more about the shipping industry before the new school year begins.

The theme of the NYK booth will be "Full Steam Ahead! Little Captains," and will feature a ship-handling simulator that will allow the children to experience captaining a car carrier transporting 6,000 vehicles. Children will be able to test their navigation skills by trying to safely maneuver the vessel through Tokyo Bay and the Singapore Strait, two of the world's busiest shipping lanes. NYK will also conduct classes to help children learn about the duties of seafarers and the ships they serve on, and how the ships support the Japanese economy.

NYK began participating in this event last year, and at the end of 2017 teamed with Mainichi Media Café to conduct a tour for 20 parent-child pairs selected by lot. Those selected were invited to Japan Marine Science Inc., an NYK subsidiary company in Kanagawa, and were given the opportunity to operate a vessel virtually using a 360-degree high-quality large-screen simulator that is used for the actual training of captains and officers. The group also visited Hikawa Maru, a museum ship currently moored in front of Yamashita Park in the port of Yokohama.

NYK looks forward to continuing the NYK Mirai Project to encourage interest in seafaring among children.

* NYK Mirai Project
This project consists of a series of activities that nurture greater awareness of maritime affairs and the seafaring life among Japan’s youth so that they can develop interest in the maritime industry and consider careers at shipping companies. The project was launched at the end of 2014.

** “Manabi no Fes”
This event is organized by the Mainichi Shimbun, one of Japan’s major newspapers, to provide children with the opportunity to learn about jobs at companies that might not be familiar to the children.
