School Principals from Qatar Visit NYK Head Office

December 17, 2008

Since March 2006, NYK has collaborated with elementary schools in Doha, Qatar, to introduce the Kumon* method of learning. This project began as an activity to commemorate NYK's 120th anniversary and to celebrate the long-term relationship that the company has built with the State of Qatar over the years, particularly in the field of LNG transport.

On 8 December 2009, Yasushi Yamawaki, executive vice-chairman of NYK; Hitoshi Nagasawa, corporate officer of NYK; and staff members of NYK's LNG Group enthusiastically welcomed Amina Al Saadi, principal of Al-Israa Independent Primary Girls School; Mohammed Al-Maraghi, principal of Omar Bin Al-Khattab Educational Complex for Boys; and staff members of the Kumon Institute of Education, which is based in Osaka. The entire group participated in a spirited discussion about education in Qatar and NYK's business activities in the country.

This project began two years ago when instructors were sent from the Kumon Institute of Education to help train selected elementary-school teachers in the Kumon method of learning. These elementary-school teachers then began to use the Kumon method in their classes, and NYK acted as a coordinator for the entire program as it gradually expanded. The learning method was initially introduced to about 100 second-grade students at Al-Israa, but after only two years, the popularity of the method has grown, and the method is now used for about 400 students in second through fifth grades at Al-Israa, and about 500 students in second through fourth grades at Omar Bin Al-Khattab. Moreover, NYK is currently in discussions with other schools that have expressed an interest in introducing this valuable learning method.

NYK is proud to be a part of the long-term human development and educating people of the State of Qatar and will continue to do all that it can to remain a socially responsible company.
