NYK to Help Rebuild School Facilities Destroyed By Earthquake in China

As mentioned in a news release on June 24, 2008, NYK has donated 10 million yen to the victims of the earthquake that devastated Sichuan province in China on May 12.

The donation was made through Plan Japan, and NYK has agreed for the funds to be used to help rebuild a two-story elementary school facilities that includes a dormitory, laboratory, library, kitchen, restaurant (360m2), and toilets (80m2). The project is expected to be completed in September 2009.

The school and its facilities were originally constructed in 1972, but were completely destroyed by the earthquake. NYK is proud to be part of a rebuilding effort that will aid in the education of these children over the long term and help eradicate poverty by that, as encouraged by the UN's Millennium Development Goal to “achieve universal primary education”.
