Yusen Terminals Recognized by Los Angeles City Council for Environmental Leadership

October 10, 2008

Yusen Terminals Inc. (YTI), a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK, has been recognized by the Los Angeles City Council for the measures that YTI has taken to protect the environment. A ceremony was held on September 19, and YTI president Yoshio Watanabe and vice-president Joe DiMassa attended.

This is the second environment-related award for the company to receive since July, when the company was recognized by the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach

YTI's container terminal at the Port of Los Angeles was the first to receive ISO14001 certification. The terminal was also the first to implement ship-to-shore alternative maritime power (AMP), which has been used since November 2007.

This recognition by the city council was presented in response to YTI's advanced operations, which have become a model for others to emulate.

"We are Los Angeles' partner in environmental progress," said Watanabe. "We pledge our commitment to work with L.A. to make our port environment a better, cleaner, and safer place to live and work."
