July 30, 2008

NYK has decided to build an innovative, state-of-the-art container hangar, the first of its kind, at the Oi Container Terminal's no. 6 berth, which is leased and operated by the company. This new hangar, which will be built in fiscal 2010 and open from the beginning of fiscal 2011, will improve yard usage, lead to increased efficiency in loading and unloading, and result in operations that are much more environment friendly.
- New Container Hangar Details
Length :150 meters Width :56 meters Area :8,400 square meters Height :31 meters Units :Two Capacity :420 TEUs per unit Two modern stacker cranes will load and unload the containers. Electric outlets will be fitted for use by reefer containers.
- Advantages of this new container hangar
- Increased efficiency in loading and unloading
a) Containers on the bottom of the stack, which previously could not be reached until those above were moved, can now be easily removed from the bottom of the hangar without first moving any other containers. b) The two stacker cranes for this hangar will be able to handle 48 containers per hour, whereas present two transfer cranes can currently handle 36 containers per hour. c) The combined impact of a) and b) above will lead to a reduction of eight minutes off the current handling time required for each container. - Improved yard usage
The new hangar will be able to handle 60,000 TEUs per year, which is a 66 percent increase over the current handling volume of 36,000 TEUs per year.
- Environment-friendly
The new stacker crane will run on electric power, thus reducing CO2 emissions by 63 percent. Moreover, use of the diesel-powered transfer crane will no longer be required.
- Increased efficiency in loading and unloading
