NYK Publishes Book of Case Studies about
Ship Engine Trouble

Case Studies: Ship Engine Trouble
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; president: Koji Miyahara) has published a new book, titled "Case Studies: Ship Engine Trouble," about ship engine trouble and preventive measures. The book summarizes information on engine trouble made public by shipowners and ship-management companies at study meetings held every year since 2004 as part of safety-promotion meetings convened regularly by NYK.

Book Overview

Title Case Studies: Ship Engine Trouble (English)
Format A4 size (30 x 21 cm); 165 pages (including color)
Price 3,150 yen (inclusive of tax)
Publisher Seizando Shoten Publishing Co., Ltd.

Structure and Features of the Book

The book features 70 cases selected by NYK from information on engine trouble collected via the above-mentioned study meetings.

Each case study consists of a summary of the engine trouble, a description of the damage, details of repairs, the cause of the engine trouble, key points, and appendices. In the appendices, drawings, numerical data, photographs, and other materials are used to clearly explain the engine trouble and the state of the damage.

A Japanese version and an English version have been published, and the latter version is intended mostly for non-Japanese crew members on NYK vessels.

NYK believes that proactive disclosure of information on engine trouble will prevent or reduce the reoccurrence of similar engine trouble, and moving forward, NYK will continue in its efforts to reduce engine trouble not only at NYK but also across the entire shipping industry via communication with shipowners and ship-management companies.
