NYK Starts Winter Safety Promotion

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koji Miyahara) will run its Winter Safety Promotion for two months from December 1, 2006, to January 31, 2007. NYK carries out the promotion every year with the aim of encouraging safe operations in the turbulent seas that are more common during the winter months. The promotion is part of the company's ongoing Sail on Safety Campaign aimed at encouraging safe operations for the company as a whole.

During this promotion, NYK executives and operations staff will visit vessels in order to deepen communication between vessel crews and land operations staff and subsequently create a polished working relationship that will have a positive impact on overall safety. Additionally, operations staff and crews will confirm safety procedures and review the steps involved in reconfirming navigation plans at sea, sharing information on weather and sea conditions, and the like.

NYK also plans to use a large tanker on December 7, 2006, and Asuka II on January 25, 2007, to conduct training on how to properly and efficiently respond to accidents. The exercise using Asuka II will allow the company to reconfirm emergency-response procedures involving passenger safety, including operations between vessel and shore to rescue passengers in need.

Through this and other related promotions and campaigns, NYK will strive to ensure safe vessel operations by identifying and addressing concerns that could possibly lead to maritime accidents.
