The NYK Shipmanagement Training Centre was jointly declared open on 27 November 2006 by Raymond Lim, Singapore's minister for transport and second minister of foreign affairs, and NYK president Koji Miyahara. NYK Shipmanagement Pte. Ltd. (NYKSM) is a Singapore-based wholly owned subsidiary of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK).
The training center is equipped with state-of-the-art simulators for conducting training specific to particular ships, equipment, and trades for current and future officers and engineers serving on board NYKSM managed and manned vessels. About 400 senior officers from around the world will be trained at this center annually.
NYKSM will use the experience that it continues to gain through the management of all types of vessels to funnel to this training center the most up-to-date information of benefit to NYK seafarers. Further, unique teaching methods will be adopted to increase the competence of NYK officers and engineers.
The establishment of this training center will assist NYK in meeting the requirement of forming a competent group of seafarers to man an NYK fleet that is expected to grow to 930 vessels by 2010. Apart from this center, NYK continues to sponsor the training of cadets in China, Croatia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Romania, and Russia. Custom-made training programs in conjunction with education and training at national training academies around the globe will help ensure that NYK maintains the most competent and efficient seafarer force in the world.
By investing in human resources, the NYK Group hopes to provide a first-class service to its customers and fulfill its corporate social responsibility.
