NYK Ceremonies Held at Shanghai Maritime University
November 13 2006
On November 1, 2006, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koji Miyahara) held a convocation ceremony for the new students being sponsored by NYK at Shanghai Maritime University, as well as a scholarship conferment ceremony for currently enrolled high-achieving students.
This year, 18 incoming students were granted sponsorship by NYK in the marine engineering course, a two-and-a-half-year program in which students receive intensive English language courses and specialized maritime training. At the conclusion of the program, students take an examination to become certified as ship officers. Successful applicants proceed to a 12-month training program on board NYK ships. Around the summer of 2010, this month's new students are expected to be offered employment as third officers on board NYK ships.
NYK was additionally proud to bestow scholarships upon the top five students completing their first year of the program, and also the top five students completing their second year of the program.
