Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha's (NYK; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koji Miyahara) bulk transport sector recently began a campaign to tighten security measures.
This campaign began in November 2006, prior to the start of a company-wide campaign in December, and through January 2007, employees will focus on accidents particular to the transport of products in bulk. The following four company groups will oversee the three-month campaign: Capesize Bulker Group, Steaming Coal Group, Forest Products Group, and Tramp Co-ordination Group.
The primary campaign activities are as follows:
To ensure thorough maintenance in the bulk fleet by reviewing the maintenance execution standards for holds, hatch covers, mooring equipment, and the like. This will help improve transport quality and prevent cargo damage and delays.
To ensure regular visits by maritime technology and engineering personnel, in addition to business development/operation personnel. During visits, personnel will inspect work environments using a checklist of priorities created for each ship type, interview crew members to ensure the full execution of activities 1 and 2, and confirm operational efficiency.
