NYK Shipmanagement Pte. Ltd.,*1 a Singapore-based subsidiary of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koji Miyahara), recently received the Excellence in Training Development Award from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).*2
Established by the MPA this year, the award recognizes individuals or organizations that foster maritime human resources in Singapore.
Since its establishment in 2001, NYK Shipmanagement has set up seafarer training centers and recruitment offices in Singapore and abroad. In cooperation with education and maritime institutions in Singapore, NYK Shipmanagement uses simulators and the like to provide trainees with practical vessel operation and engineering training, while also ensuring that trainees receive the latest information about operational safety and environmental conservation. In fiscal 2005, the company plans to train approximately 630 seafarers around the world.
This October in western Singapore, the company also plans to open a training center that is fully equipped with large-scale simulators that will help provide advanced training about vessel and engine-room operations. The company plans to train over 400 seafarers per year at this facility.
MPA's award is in appreciation for the continual efforts by NYK Shipmanagement to provide education and training for seafarers. The company will continue to place safety as its highest priority by making efforts to enhance the content of its training curriculum and improve training facilities.
