Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koji Miyahara) conducted a joint antipiracy exercise with the Japan Coast Guard on September 15, 2006. The exercise scenario had Toba, NYK's 299,980 DWT crude-oil tanker, being attacked by pirates in the South China Sea.

The exercise began with crew members on Toba reporting to the affiliated ship-management company and the Japan Coast Guard about an attack by pirates in a high-speed boat. The Japan Coast Guard immediately ordered Ryukyu, a patrol boat cruising in the vicinity, to offer assistance. The pirates eventually abandoned their attack on the tanker and fled after Toba took evasive maneuvers, which included zigzag navigation and the firing of the ship's water cannons.

In addition to the Japan Coast Guard, the Japanese Shipowners' Association (JSA) and the International Shipping Division of the Maritime Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) participated in the exercise. All parties reconfirmed their roles and the channels of information exchange in the event of a pirate attack.

In order to prepare for and prevent all conceivable emergencies, NYK continues to proactively participate in joint exercises with relevant domestic and overseas parties not only through similar antipiracy training but also antiterrorism exercises, including one conducted in May with the Hong Kong Police Force.
