Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK; President: Koji Miyahara) has decided to extend its scholarship programs at Shanghai Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University in China until the year 2010.
The scholarship programs were first established in 2001 for a five-year term and were scheduled to end this year. However, there were strong requests to continue the scholarships from both universities and the Ministry of Communications of the People's Republic of China. NYK therefore decided to extend the scholarship programs until 2010. The scholarships are given every year to 36 students at Shanghai Maritime University and 30 students at Dalian Maritime University who have excellent academic records from the previous year and are in financial need.
In addition to these scholarships, NYK has a scholarship program that was set up in 2003 for 40 students each year at Wuhan University of Technology.
The company also established two training courses in October 2002 for developing future crew members in China. One of these courses is on board an NYK ship for graduates of Dalian Maritime University and Wuhan University of Technology. The other is a special class on campus established by NYK at Shanghai Maritime University. These courses provide crew member candidates with a combination of classroom work and onboard training.
Information about the scholarships at Shanghai Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University was introduced in Communications News, issued by the Ministry of Communications of the People's Republic of China, and received generous praise from many. NYK will continue to do all that it can to contribute to the development of China's marine transportation industry.
