Honorary chairman Jiro Nemoto of Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) will be awarded by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano the decoration of Grande Ufficiale.
The award is the highest honor among Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella della Solidarieta Italiana decorations that a non-Italian private citizen can receive.
INemoto has been involved vigorously in activities as an important member of the Italy-Japan Business Group (IJBG) since he was stationed in Milan in 1963 as the carrier's first representative in the city.
The honorary chairman, who led a delegation from Japan at an IJBG meeting in Turin in November 2004, has contributed significantly to Japan-Italy exchanges.
Consisting mainly of private enterprises in Japan and Italy, the interchange group promotes 1) trade, 2) investment, and 3) cooperation in markets worldwide.
It is being operated with support from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Nemoto receives the decorations of Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in February 2002 and Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur of French Republic in July 2004.
