NYK Transports Aid to Earthquake-Stricken Areas of Pakistan

July 26, 2006

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koji Miyahara) and its group company Tokyo Senpaku Kaisha Ltd. (TSK Line; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Kinichi Hirayama) shipped sixty-five 20-foot containers* fully loaded with aid supplies free of charge from Taiwan and Japan to ports near earthquake-stricken areas in Pakistan between October 2005 and June 2006.

The NYK Group collaborated with Japan Platform** (JPF), an international humanitarian assistance organization, to send necessary commodities, such as blankets, wheelchairs, power generators, and rice, in response to data gathered by nonprofit organizations (NPOs) and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) associated with JPF. Collaboration with the NPOs and NGOs allowed aid supplies to be transported effectively and swiftly from departure points to the afflicted areas.

NYK and JPF also collaborated in the NYK Group-JPF Joint Aid Supplies Transportation Project, which was established to provide aid during the aftermath of the earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Java on May 27, 2006.
