NYK Offers Aid to Indonesian Area Hit by Earthquake
May 29, 2006
All members of the NYK Group would like to take this occasion to express their profound sympathy for the tragic loss experienced by so many on the Indonesian island of Java, which was rocked by a powerful earthquake on May 27. We are praying for the earliest possible reconstruction of the quake-stricken area.
In response to this tragedy, the NYK Group has decided to donate a sum of 10 million yen to the nonprofit organization Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA),* which has dispatched a medical team comprising members from seven countries, including Japan, to the quake-hit area to extend urgent medical assistance.
Furthermore, the NYK Group has started to collect donations from individuals within the group for assistance to relief work in the quake-stricken area. NYK will add a matching gift** to the collected donations.
The NYK Group is also looking into the transport of relief goods and is now studying the possibility of providing assistance along with nonprofit organizations (NPO) and nongovernmental organizations (NGO) that have previously partnered with NYK in various relief projects.
This organization, established in 1984 and headquartered in the Japanese prefecture of Okayama, has extended medical aid and assistance for the stabilization of livelihoods to socially and economically underprivileged people suffering from wars, natural disasters, and poverty in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Among Japan's NPOs and NGOs, AMDA has been notably quick to provide assistance centering on medical aid, such as the dispatch of doctors, to the victims of recent major natural disasters, such as the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Sumatra in 2004, the strong earthquake in Pakistan in 2005, and the massive landslide on the Philippine island of Leyte earlier this year.
