NYK to Train Cadets for Its Fleet in Croatia and Romania; To Open NYK Special Classes at Universities of These Countries in Europe

December 27, 2005

NYK has recently decided to create NYK Special Classes at the University of Split Faculty of Maritime Studies-Split in Croatia and Universitatea Maritima Constanta in Romania from fiscal 2006 in collaboration with those universities.

Already, both Croatia and Romania have so far been important supply sources of seafarers employed to man NYK vessels. In 2005, NYK trained a total of 22 cadets for its fleet in the two countries.

However, in order to meet the need to increase able seafaring personnel in parallel with the expansion of the NYK fleet, NYK has decided to create NYK Special Classes in collaboration with the said maritime universities of the two countries (20 to 30 cadets each to be enrolled at these universities in fiscal 2006). The special classes will train cadets for the NYK fleet through an even more practical program for fostering seafarers.

In June this year, NYK set up the seafarer strategy project group in the head office and has since redoubled efforts to secure excellent personnel for the ever-expanding NYK fleet. The collaboration with the two universities in Croatia and Romania forms part of this project.

As of now, NYK is pushing ahead with the following programs for training and securing cadet seafarers:

  1. China (NYK Special Classes created, and graduates trained aboard NYK vessels)
    -   Graduate cadets are accepted from Dalian Maritime University and Wuhan University of Technology, and trained aboard NYK vessels.
    -   At the NYK Special Class, created at Shanghai Maritime University, cadets are trained and educated first in the classroom, and then aboard NYK vessels.
  2. The Philippines (maritime university to be established)

  3. NYK plans to open a maritime university for training cadet seafarers in Canlubang in the suburbs of Manila in June 2007 as a joint project with the Transnational Diversified Group, NYK's business partner in the Philippines.

  4. Japan (NYK's own training program)

  5. In February 2005, NYK started to also accept applications from students of four-year universities in general for enrollment as cadets to be trained as candidates for captains/chief engineers of oceangoing vessels under NYK's independent training program.
