Representatives from Seven Countries Attend Recruitment and Training Meeting for New Crew Members
November 14, 2005

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) recently held its first Global Manning Meeting at its headquarters in Tokyo. The objective of the meeting was to discuss measures for the recruitment and training of future crew members. Around 50 individuals from Croatia, Romania, India, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, China, and Japan participated. Those attending, specialists in the recruitment and training of crew members, represented ship-management companies, recruitment companies, NYK's partner universities, and NYK Group companies in Japan and overseas.
NYK's medium-term group management plan, "New Horizon 2007," was released in March of this year and proposed three strategies for the next three fiscal years. To achieve NYK's first goal of expanding its maritime business, the company will invest 1,380 billion yen over the next six fiscal years to increase the number of vessels in the NYK fleet from 660 to 880. In line with this expansion, the NYK Group plans to recruit around 2000 new crew members to man the additional vessels.
In the Global Manning Meeting, NYK gathered all members who are engaged in the recruitment and training of crew members and explained the group's strategies for achieving its future goals. Energetic debates about reinforcement of recruitment and training systems for crew members and cadets ensued, and all participants left with a better understanding of the challenges that lie ahead.
NYK plans to hold global manning meetings regularly and will strive to continue to recruit and foster talented crew members in order to ensure safe vessel operations.
