NYK Group Assists in Disaster Relief after Hurricane Katrina

September 7, 2005

The NYK Group is currently engaged in disaster relief activities in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.

NYK Line (North America) Inc., the U.S.-based affiliate of NYK Line, is currently providing refrigerated containers and dry containers free of charge in support of the relief effort. The containers are being used to transport ice, food, and drinking water to the area.

NYK Line has lent two 40-foot refrigerated containers and one 20-foot container to the Ports and Harbors Bureau in the state of Georgia. This bureau is presently fulfilling the role of support mediator. In addition, a trucking company, one of NYK Line's customers, is cooperating by transporting containers from the port of Savannah to the states of Louisiana and Mississippi. Furthermore, additional discussions are currently taking place about lending two 40-foot refrigerated containers and one 20-foot container to aid in the transportation of drinking water.

All of the U.S.-based NYK Group affiliates, including the two mentioned above, are now asking all company members to make relief donations. The NYK Group will match each donation made to the American Red Cross1.

Further, Nippon Cargo Airlines Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company, plans to begin supporting the relief effort by transporting necessary commodities to the disaster stricken areas.

The NYK Group will continue to aid the victims of this hurricane through group operations utilizing the monohakobi (transport) network.
