NYK's First Liquid Sulfur Tanker Named 'HESTIANA'

May 12, 2005

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has held the naming ceremony for its Liquid Sulfur Tanker (3,599-DWT), 'HESTIANA', at Hashihama Dock, Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd. in Imabari-shi (Ehime Prefecture), Japan.

This vessel is the first NYK-owned tanker dedicated to liquid sulfur, which will serve Mitsubishi Corporation and will be mainly used to transport liquid sulfur loaded in Japan, to Korea, China and the Southeast Asian region.

Liquid sulfur, one byproduct of the oil refining process, is refined further as a raw material for resin, textiles, fertilizer and tires. Its demand is increasing on a worldwide scale and transport of the product, especially to China and neighbouring countries is expected to increase further in the future.

The vessel is named after the Greek mythological figure, 'Hestiana', meaning 'God of Furnaces'.

With the completion of this tanker, the number of NYK's operating vessels related to petrochemical products amounts to 11 vessels dedicated to petrochemicals, 4 methanol carriers, 10 LPG carriers and 1 liquid sulfur tanker, a total of 26 vessels.
