NYK Trains Chinese Cadets As Third Mates and Engineers Through Its Seafarers Education and Training Program in China
April 28, 2005
Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has been implementing its Seafarers Education and Training Program in China as part of a worldwide plan to train crew on board its own vessels. As a result, the first four Chinese cadets, two qualified third mates and two third qualified engineers will board one of NYK's ships in May 2005.
The Seafarers Education and Training Program in China for NYK vessels, was designed by NYK with the aim of passing down its accumulative ship operational know-how to the next generation. Two classes have been underway since October 2004. One class accepts graduate cadets from Dalian Maritime University and Wuhan University of Technology and trains them on board an NYK ship. The other, a special class created by NYK in collaboration with Shanghai Maritime University, allows cadets to be trained and educated by NYK in the classroom as well as practically on board one of its ships.
The four cadets to board NYK's ship this May are graduates from Dalian Maritime University and Wuhan University of Technology and have completed training aboard one of NYK's container vessels. They will be stationed on board an NYK ship together with other crews from Japan, Croatia, India and the Philippines.
The first 39 graduates from the special class at Shanghai Maritime University boarded one of NYK's ships in March 2005 for the 12-month training program.
