NYK to Join Chemical Distribution Audit Program in Europe

March 31, 2005

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has decided to join a safety audit program which has been created by the European chemical industry in relation to the transportation of chemical products by container. NYK is the first Japanese company to participate in this program.

In 1994, European chemical companies established the Chemical Distribution Institute (CDI), a non-profit organization independent from the industry segment, to evaluate the safety of tankers carrying mainly bulk petrochemical products, and port facilities where chemical products are handled. CDI, evaluating safety issues concerning the transportation of chemical products by specialized vessels, has additionally established an audit program entitled "CDI-mpc*" covering the transportation of chemical products by container vessels.

This program facilitates safety evaluations for container vessels which carry chemical products, port facilities and warehouses. Evaluation results are disclosed to CDI member companies, which deal mainly with chemical products.

Moreover, a safety evaluation system being indexed through this program will be completed to accommodate customers' needs for greater safety.

The Company continues to focus on the safe transport of cargo and will respond sincerely to customers' demands for safety.

* CDI-mpc, an abbreviation for Chemical-Distribution Institute Marine Packed Cargo, are arrangements in relation to audits concerning the safe transportation of chemical products carried by container vessels. The arrangements are adapted not only for container vessels to be used for the transportation of chemical products, but also for related port facilities and warehouses.
